Choosing the Right Water Heater

Whether you’re replacing an old tank based water heater or are planning a new home construction project and want to know what your options are, we can advise you of the best path forward.

types of Hot Water Heaters

tank water heater

When you think of a water heater typically you are thinking of a standard gas or propane water heater with a holding tank. Simply gas or electricity heats the water in a holding tank making it available when you need it for your shower or to wash your dishes. Typically these are the least efficient way to heat your water but it is the lower cost option to install or replace. The one caveat is that there is a limited amount of water in the tank and at some point it will run out and you will need to wait for the water in the tank to heat back up before using it to ensure you have nice hot water. Additionally, the water is heated all the time meaning that the water in the tank must stay hot even when you are not using it. This results in a slightly less efficeint operation.

Tankless water heater

A tankless water heater or sometimes referred to as an on demand water heater is another great option for heating water. Instead of using a holding tank when you turn on the hot water, water flows through a heat exchanger, either natural gas or electricity heats the water. Tankless units are typically more efficient thank a standard hot water tank but they are a little more costly to install or replace. A tankless is a great option at is provides endless hot water heating up the water as you need it. Since the water is only being heated when you use it. This results in a much higher efficiency operation.

Heat pump water heater

This is the newest member on the scene leaning on the technology of air source heat pumps. Similar in principle to a standard hot water tank, this heater has a holding tank and keeps the water hot and ready in a fixed volume for when you need it. Instead of heating the water using gas or an electric element. A heat pump works by absorbing heat from the air inside of your home and rejecting that heat into the water. This is a slower process and is great for keeping the holding tank warm when not in use. These tanks are equipped with a back up heating element to support regeneration in the event of high hot water usage. These are high efficiency appliances but they are a little more expensive to replace, typically closer in cost to a tankless hot water heater. Currently heat pump hot water heaters are eligible for up to a $1000 dollar rebate from the greener homes program.
